I'd like to influence everyone, not just kids, but also adults, to exercise continuous learning. It’s easy to feel like when you were in school, that's when learning counted the most; that's when you were “required” to learn, but school has a way of putting learning in this certain unexplainable view for most. A large majority of people often aren’t in the mood to be told what to do and as a result, may not feel like learning at the institution’s dedicated timeframe, but anything you know how to do, you know how to do, because you learned it.
Anything you're going to know how to do, you're going to know how to do, because you learned it. There’s a process that comes with discovering and understanding something new. The process can be scary because anything you start learning, you're going to be bad at in the beginning. I said this last year, when you started walking, when you first started trying to walk, you were really bad at walking and now you’re a lot better at it. Adapt that same mindset with anything that you learn. Pushing past that fear of the unknown can be intimidating because nobody wants to be bad at something.
This summer I’m completing an internship in the real estate industry. I don't know anything about real estate. I'm getting into it and on the first day of the internship, I went to a board meeting with several people present, and one of them passed me a document. I'm looking at the paper, observing all of the investment properties they have around the country, and they give me all the numbers and all the details on each of these properties. I promise you, I can't understand one word that anybody is saying in the room, but for me, I'm looking at it like, man, that's cool. I know that at some point, I'm going to be able to understand everything they're talking about.
Now I have a guide and I’m able to gauge and to see how much progress I’ll be able to accomplish once I apply myself. So just knowing that, essentially, learning is a superpower. You can become anything you want but you have to be patient enough to earn it.
