Make the Most of the Game You're In

Pay Attention to the People Who Have Already Done What You're Trying To Do

When you step into a new space—whether it’s basketball, business, or anything else—you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. There are people who have already been where you’re trying to go, and if you’re paying attention, you can pick up game without having to make every mistake yourself.

That’s why I always say: Be observant. Keep your eyes open, your ears open, and take advantage of the opportunities around you.

Learning from the Vets (and Everybody Else Too)

It’s obvious that you can learn from the vets. That’s what they’re there for. They’ve been through the ups and downs, seen it all, and if you’re smart, you’ll listen when they talk. But it’s not just about the Hall of Famers or the guys with the biggest names. You can learn from everybody. The two-way guys, the G League guys, the players grinding for their spot—everybody has something to offer if you’re willing to pay attention.

When I played with Chris Paul, I had a choice. I could have just been his teammate, let him do his thing, and kept my distance. Or I could capitalize on the opportunity—ask questions, hang out, watch how he moves. That’s what I did. And that’s what I encourage anybody to do when they’re around people who’ve been there before.

Opportunities Are Everywhere

Being observant is like opening a door for yourself. You never know what you might pick up just by watching how someone handles a situation, how they approach their work, or how they respond to adversity. Every moment is a chance to grow.

Some people let those moments pass by. They assume if someone isn’t a superstar, they don’t have anything to offer. But the truth is, you can learn something from anyone—if you’re willing to pay attention.

Make the Most of the Game You're In

No matter what space you’re in, the lesson is the same. You might not have all the answers right now, but there’s somebody who does. Watch them. Learn from them. Ask the questions. Soak up the knowledge.

You don’t have to go through every struggle alone. The blueprint is already out there—you just have to be willing to follow it.
